At the East of England Wine Awards, run by WineGB East, the wines undergo a rigorous judging process. The judges evaluate the wines for quality, consistency, and variety, aiming to highlight the best wines from the East of England.
- Each wine is tasted individually by each judge.
- They know the grape varieties and vintages, but the producer and brand identities are hidden to ensure strict blind tasting.
- The wines are grouped into flights, for example 100% Bacchus still wines from the previous vintage. In the judging for the 2025 Awards, this flight was for 2024 Bacchus still wines.
- The judges then compare notes and their scores on each wine in a flight and reach a consensus on each wine’s medal.
- Where there is a difference of opinion, wines are re-tasted and discussed again by the judges and the Head Judge makes the final decision where necessary.
Wines that reach the highest quality levels are categorised into medals – Gold, Silver and Bronze, with Gold medals awarded to wines that demonstrate exceptional quality.
As the case with other wine awards like Decanter, this means it is entirely possible for several wines to be awarded a bronze, silver or gold medal in one flight. Similarly, another flight may yield fewer medals.
Our judges are drawn from wine industry experts with the internationally recognised WSET Diploma qualification and from the buying and sommelier community
